Since April 2024, the partial legalization "CanG" allows the possession of certain amounts of cannabis for personal use and facilitates access to medical therapies. Cannabis is no longer considered a narcotic under the BtMG, but is subject to the Cannabis Act (KCanG) and - in the medical field - the Medical Cannabis Act (MedCanG). Medical cannabis is now prescribed with a normal e-prescription, which creates legal certainty and reduces bureaucratic hurdles.
Since October 2024, health insurance approval is no longer required before treatment can begin. As a result, treatments are available more quickly and the administrative burden is significantly reduced.
Medicinal cannabis preparations can be used in various areas under medical supervision. The most common applications include
Chronic pain, especially neuropathic pain
Spasticity, for example in multiple sclerosis
Nausea and vomiting as a result of chemotherapy
Epilepsy, especially rare, therapy-resistant forms
Sleep disorders
Anxiety disorders
Which therapy is appropriate in each individual case depends on the diagnosis, the course of treatment to date and the doctor's assessment.
The form of administration depends on the prescribed dosage form and the therapeutic objective:
Inhalation of flowers via a medical vaporizer (vaporizer)
Oral administration as standardized drops, capsules or solutions
Ready-to-use medicines such as sprays or tablets, depending on the doctor's prescription
The appropriate form is selected on an individual basis according to medical assessment and therapy requirements.
Medicinal cannabis is grown under controlled conditions, is microbiologically tested and standardized for its THC and CBD content. It meets strict quality standards in accordance with the German Pharmacopoeia.
Recreational cannabis is not subject to these standards. Composition, active ingredient content and purity can therefore vary greatly.
Yes, the consumption of medicinal cannabis is generally permitted in public with a valid doctor's prescription. To avoid misunderstandings during police checks, it is advisable to carry a copy of the prescription or a current doctor's letter with you.
Local regulations such as smoking bans in non-smoking areas, public buildings, train stations or means of transportation continue to apply.
Yes, driving is generally permitted as long as your ability to drive is not impaired. Please note:
Dosing phase: You should not drive a vehicle during the adjustment phase.
After taking preparations containing THC: Wait at least 4-6 hours, as the ability to react may be limited during this time.
Proof at check-ups: Carry a copy of the prescription or a doctor's letter with you to prove the medical prescription.
Your own assessment: Only ride if you feel safe and fit to ride.
Yes, travel is possible, but certain rules apply:
Within the Schengen area: With a special certificate in accordance with the Schengen Agreement, you may carry your prescribed quantities with you. This certificate is issued by your treating doctor and must be certified by the competent authority before you travel.
Outside the Schengen area: The regulations vary from country to country. Check with the BfArM or the Federal Foreign Office in good time to find out whether and under what conditions import is permitted.
In Germany, all doctors registered with the national health insurance system are generally permitted to prescribe medical cannabis; dentists are excluded from this. There is no requirement for a specialist referral.
In practice, however, not all practices have experience with cannabinoid therapies. Specialist doctors - for example from the fields of pain therapy, neurology or oncology - often take over the treatment in order to provide optimal support for the therapy.
KHIRON stands for an open, modern approach to cannabis. For all those who have questions.
